Safety tips for seniors at home

After 65+ age the life have changed for everyone and experience some problem regarding decline in their mental faculties and in visions and with health too. At this age elders could not be able to take care themselves and hurt themselves unintentionally. We should know about their safety.

1- Home Safety for seniors.
  1. Remove obstacles in the house that could cause trip.
  2. Install lights on the stairs with light switch at the top of the stairs and at the bottom of the stairs.
  3. Install handrail at the stairs.
  4. Put non-slipper mats in the bathroom on the shower and on the floors.
  5.  Install bar in the bathroom, around the toilet and the tub to hold.
  6. Paint your doors with a different and highlighting colour to avoid tripping.
  7. Put on hip pads for high risk of falls.
  8. Make home lighting brighter, but prevent glare.
  9. Visit doctor and checked vision often.
  10. Start exercising regularly, especially tai chi or yoga to increase flexibility and strengthen muscles and joints.
  11. If you are not able to stand properly then do exercise on chair.
  12. Make the big number plate for home for better visibility from the street and do the same inside the home so elder’s people can read it.
  13. Give the keys to only trusty neighbours when you leave home. 
  14. Make sure all doors are locked when you are busy with your work and your beloved seniors with you at home.
  15. Tell elders does not open door for anyone expect us.
  16. If elder wants to use phone help them.
  17. Don’t tell anyone that you’re elder alone at home.
  18. Don’t let them think that they are alone. Turn on a radio or television in another room to give the impression that someone else is around.
  19. Make it a habit to be security conscious.
  20. Use a microwave rather than the stove.
  21. Install the smoke detector in all rooms and check often.
  22. Do not let then wear loose clothes that can cause of falling and fabric while they are cooking.
  23. Keep a fire extinguisher handy.
  24. Put the switches at the entrances.
  25. All the electric wires should be fixing properly and not be open from anywhere.

When people start getting old, in most case, they start facing health problems. Though this is very common but if neglected this may turn out to be alarming. To make the ‘second innings’ of your life blissful you need to seriously start making small but significant changes in your lifestyle.

You would feel this in your hands, neck, lower back and weight-bearing joints of your body, such as knees and hips.

Symptoms of OSTEOARTHRITIS
1.   Inflexibility and mild pain which comes and goes with activities elders do like walking, bending, or stooping to severe joint pain that keeps on even when you rest or try to sleep.
2.  Sometimes people would feel the pain in the joints even they have not moved them for a while. Once the tautness goes away when you move the joint.
3.  It can also cause problems moving joints and sometimes disability if your back, knees, or hips are affected.

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

Itis an autoimmune disease which means your body attacks the lining of a joint just as it would if it were trying to protect you from injury or disease. It leads to inflammationin your joints of body. The inflammation causes like pain, swelling, and stiffness that lasts for hours. It can happen in different joints at the same time. You cannot be able to move the joints. People who are suffering from it don't feel well.

Gout is most often a problem in the big toe, but it can affect other joints, including your ankle, elbow, knee, wrist, hand, or other toes. Swelling may cause the skin to pull tightly around the joint and make the area red or purple and very tender. Your doctor might suggest blood tests and x-rays. He or she might also take a sample of fluid from your joint while you are having an attack.
